National Highways are carrying out an extensive programme of work to update the technology in and around the Saltash Tunnel in Cornwall to keep journeys safe and reliable, and reduce the risk of unplanned closures.
Works are progressing to schedule and the civil engineering phase of the programme for the tunnel’s major upgrade is near completion.
This work has included:
- removal of existing gantries on site
- the completion of four new gantry bases near the tunnel
- the erection of steel gantries onto these bases for large information signs (9m tall)
- new gantries on the inside of the tunnel (ongoing this month)
- works on site around some sign foundations
The gantries will hold electronic information signs displaying live traffic and travel information. The 30mph speed limits will remain at present to help manage traffic flows, to protect both the travelling public and tunnel infrastructure. These speed restrictions also help maintain traffic flows along a busy stretch of road.
